The United States is currently grappling with a tragic event that has shocked the nation and raised urgent questions about campus safety. On Saturday night, a deadly shooting occurred during a homecoming celebration at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, leaving one person dead and six others injured. This incident has reignited conversations about violence on college campuses and the need for stronger security measures during large events.
The Tragedy Unfolds

The shooting took place around 9:30 p.m. during a “tailgate celebration” near the football stadium at the historic Chester County campus, approximately 50 miles west of Philadelphia. According to officials, gunfire erupted, creating a chaotic scene where people fled in all directions.
One individual was killed, and six others were wounded. While the identity of the deceased has not been officially released, authorities have confirmed that the victim was shot in the head. All six injured individuals are reportedly expected to survive, though their exact conditions remain undisclosed.
Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe described the scene as “devastating” and emphasized the urgency of the ongoing investigation. He stated that the shooting did not appear to be a planned attack but rather an act of spontaneous violence.
“We’re operating as if this is not an incident where someone came in with the design to inflict mass damage on a college campus,” de Barrena-Sarobe said during a press conference.
A Moment of Chaos

Students and alumni who were attending the homecoming festivities found themselves caught in the middle of the violence. Asya Price, a student visiting from Widener University, recalled hearing what she initially thought were fireworks.
“I just remember hearing noises at first. I thought it was fireworks,” Price said. “We just came to have a good time, and people that don’t even attend the school ruined it.”
Zakiyyah Bilao, Price’s friend, echoed similar sentiments, expressing frustration that the celebration was overshadowed by the tragedy.
“This was supposed to be a joyful event, but instead, we were running for our lives,” Bilao said.
Terina Clarke, an alumna of Lincoln University, was among those who left the campus just moments before the shooting. She expressed concern over the lack of supervision during the event.
“It was too many people here with a lack of supervision,” Clarke said. “I know I could have been caught up because I’m disabled. They could have trampled over me.”
The Aftermath and Response
In the wake of the shooting, Lincoln University has taken several steps to support its community. Classes have been suspended for Monday, and counseling services will be available throughout the week. The university also plans to hold a healing and reflection event at noon on Monday.
University police chief Marc Partee addressed the media, expressing deep concern for the students, alumni, and visitors who were affected by the incident.
“This was to be a joyous occasion, homecoming, when individuals come back and they give back to their alma mater, and they live the good memories of their times at Lincoln University which has propelled them into life,” Partee said. “This was interrupted by gunfire that should not have occurred.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro offered his full support to the university and local law enforcement. He urged residents to avoid the area and follow the guidance of law enforcement while praying for the Lincoln University community.
Investigation Underway

Authorities have arrested one individual, Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, a resident of Wilmington, Delaware, who was found in possession of a gun. He has been charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a license and is being held on $25,000 cash bail. However, investigators have not yet determined whether the gun found on Morgan-Thompson was used in the shooting.
De Barrena-Sarobe stated that there is a “strong belief” that more than one shooter was involved, but he emphasized that the incident does not appear to be premeditated.
“We believe they would have operated differently. So we’re treating this as a shooting that broke out in the middle of homecoming weekend,” de Barrena-Sarobe said.
The FBI has also joined the investigation and is urging anyone with information or cell phone video to submit tips through their website.
National Concerns Over Campus Safety

The shooting at Lincoln University is part of a growing trend of violence on college campuses across the United States. In recent months, multiple incidents have raised concerns about the safety of students during large events, particularly during late-night hours.
Just days before the Lincoln University shooting, three teenagers were shot near Clark Atlanta University and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. These incidents highlight the need for increased security measures not only on campus but also in surrounding areas where students gather.
Parents, students, and university officials are calling for a review of safety protocols to ensure that future events do not put students at risk.
A Historic Institution in Crisis
Lincoln University, founded in 1854 as The Ashmun Institute, is the nation’s first degree-granting historically Black university (HBCU). It has produced notable alumni such as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and former NYC deputy mayor Philip Banks III.
Despite its rich history and legacy, the university now faces a difficult chapter following the shooting. Alumni and students alike are expressing shock and sadness, with many hoping that the tragedy will lead to positive change.
“I’m going to be a Lincoln alumnus for life, through the good and the bad,” said Terina Clarke. “I’m just praying for those folks’ families that came out to have a good time. It’s just a sad situation.”
What’s Next?
As the investigation continues, the Lincoln University community is coming together to support one another. Flowers have been placed on the campus steps, and alumni are leaning on each other for strength.
University officials have also urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation. With the help of local, state, and federal law enforcement, authorities hope to bring those responsible for the shooting to justice.
For now, the focus remains on healing, reflection, and ensuring that such tragedies do not occur again.
