Ben Milliken led the way for Sarasota Christian with 18 points, and Travis Miller had 9.

THURSDAY

Boys Basketball

Sarasota 71, IMG Black 47: Johnny Lackaff picked up right where he left off last season by pouring in 26 points to help host Sarasota High power past the IMG Black Team, 71-47.

The 6-foot-4 junior guard led the Sailors (4-0) in scoring last season on a 28-3 team that won the Class 7A-Region 3 title. Lackaff resumed his position as high-point man again against the Ascenders (2-3).

Lackaff received plenty of support from his teammates, all of whom played against the Ascenders. Sam Reindell, a 6-8 senior, was next in line for the Sailors with 14 points.

“It was a great atmosphere,” Sailors head basketball coach and athletic director BJ Ivey said. “I thought the student body was outstanding.

“We got the chance to play everybody. A lot of guys contributed off the bench, which is something we asked them to do in pregame. All in all it was a great day for Sarasota High basketball.”

The game was designated as the White-Out Game with the Sailors wearing their home white uniforms for the 12:50 p.m. tipoff. Students with an ID who met certain criteria, including at least an unweighted GPA of 3.0 and no referrals this school year, were admitted free of charge and allowed to skip their afternoon classes.

Based on the attendance, the Sailors must have plenty of smart students who stay out of trouble. There wasn’t an empty seat at Edward F. Howell Gymnasium.

A pep band heavy on percussion, along with a squad of 18 spirited cheerleaders, also helped keep the full house vocal.

The idea was spearheaded by assistant principal Robin Livingston, herself a Sarasota High graduate.

“We have a program called PBIS, which is positive behavior and intervention support,” Livingston said. “Our basketball team has been doing great. It’s exciting. We’ve had a lot of the students coming to the games. It’s really an exciting atmosphere.

“So we figured this would help build the PBIS program and reward the students. We wanted to thank them for doing what they are supposed to be doing in school.”

Nicholas Woodward paced the Ascenders by scoring 14 points, and teammate Carter Mills was also in double figures with 12.

The Sailors were phenomenal at the foul line, going 22-for-24 after making their first 16 free throw attempts before missing a charity toss.

The Sailors return to the hardwood at Timber Creek on Saturday for a non-school day 2 p.m. tipoff. The Ascenders are scheduled to take on Dunedin next at home on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
